This window decal is part of Target’s summer theming for the store. Inside they have some really great items hanging from the ceiling, like plastic shovels that have been printed on heavy cardboard. They’re flat, but from a distance they’re pretty convincing. Good work Target!

My upbringing was nontraditional, to say the least. Orphaned at childbirth, after a dragon named Ridley slaughtered my parents, I was brought up on the planet Zebes by an alien race known as the Chozo. Half-bird and half-human, my Chozo surrogates taught me that gender, relationships and sexuality do not follow rigid rules. “Women are warriors,” my Chozo parents would squawk as they trained me for battle, “Now go practice your ice beam on the Metroids in the basement.” The Galactic Federation hired me as a bounty hunter to eradicate the Mother Brain. I kept my femininity a secret, hidden under the bulk of my Power Suit. While it felt liberating to reveal my true self to the universe after completing my first mission twenty years ago, there is something else I have been hiding: I am a lesbian.

Portland - Thanks for Having Me!

I spent a big chunk of the last week in Portland and saw hundreds of neat things, and that was just in the downtown area! I drank great coffee, saw great art, lush trees, hippies, sun, rain, and a lot more. Such a beautiful city. I was invited out by the Panic crew, we’re working on something hush-hush, but they gave me some free time to check out their beautiful city too! Here’s some visual highlights from my trip:

All of these photos are posted to my Instagram account. I use it quite a bit at home in Austin, but when I really find it useful is when I’m travelling, between my iPhone and this app, I don’t have to carry a camera for snapshots, and it encourages me to really focus on all the small things that catch my eye. It’s not always the big monuments that I want to remember, I can find pictures of those anywhere online. What I can’t find is a picture of how the flowers of a tree were stuck to the sidewalk in an elegant way, or how there was a really cool sticker on the back of a sign that I want to remember, or how I had to walk in the middle of a square to take a picture of an elephant statue with an audience of people on the benches watching me (in my mind at least ;o) it’s all those little things that add up and create a memory for me. So keep it simple Instagram and you’ve got a fan for life.
